Celebrating twenty-five years of service to the Supreme Court, the legal profession, historians, and the public, the Supreme Court Historical Society was incorporated in 1974 for the purpose of expanding public awareness of the history and heritage of the Supreme Court of the United States.  The Historical Society was established on the recommendation of an ad hoc committee of attorneys, legal scholars, and other concerned citizens appointed to advise Chief Justice Warren Burger on the need for such an organization.  The Society is funded through membership contributions, gifts, grants, and an endowment.
The Society supports important historical research including the Documentary History of the Supreme Court of the United States.  This project is to reconstruct the historical records of the Court's first decade.  The first six volumes have now been published in the Documentary History of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1789-1800, with a seventh volume expected in the next two years.
In addition, the Society also works closely with the Court Curator's Office to identify and acquire historically significant items including portraits and period antiques which create a rich historical panorama for the nearly one million annual visitors to the Supreme Court building.
