CONTRIBUTORS

Gary Jan Aichele is a Professor of Political Science at Juniata College in Pennsylvania and the author of a recent book entitled Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Soldier, Scholar, Judge. Professor Aichele is a member of the Society and served as its Executive Director from 1980 to 1984.

Peter G. Fish is a Professor of Political Science and Law at Duke University. He is an authority on the fourth circuit courts and is a member of the Society.

Paul A. Freund is Carl M. Loeb University Professor Emeritus at Harvard University. From 1932 to 1933 he served as a law clerk to Justice Louis D. Brandeis. He was chairman of the Study Group on the Supreme Court Caseload in 1972.

Milton C. Handler is a partner in the firm of Kaye, Scholar, Fierman, Hayes & Handler, a former Professor of Law at Columbia University and a member of the Society.

Andrew Kaufman is Charles Stebbins Fairchild Professor at Harvard Law School and the author of Commercial Law and Problems in Professional Responsibility. Professor Kaufman served as a law clerk to Associate Justice Felix Frankfurter from 1955 to 1957. He is currently nearing completion of a biography of Justice Benjamin Cardozo.

William E. Leuchtenberg is a Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Professor of Legal History at Duke University.

John S. Monagan was a Democratic Congressman from Connecticut's 5th District from 1959 to 1973. He was a senior partner at Whitman and Ransom in New York from 1973 to 1980 and a visiting lecturer at William and Mary Law School in 1982. Mr. Monagan is the author of several articles and books including The Grand Panjandiwn: The Mellow Years of Justice Holmes.

Richard B. Morris was the Gouverneur Morris Professor of History at Columbia University. The late Professor Morris edited the John Jay Papers, was a founding member of the American Journal of Legal History, served as President of the American Historical Association during the Bicentennial Year of 1976 and pioneered, with Justice Frankfurter, the use of Court records in the writing of social history.

David M. O'Brien is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville and the author of Storm Center: The Supreme Court in American Politics as well as numerous other titles. Professor O'Brien is a member of the Society and a member of its Board of Editors.

Sandra Day O'Connor is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and a Life Member of the Society.

Michael Ruby is collaborating on an oral history project with his grand-uncle, Milton Handler. Mr. Ruby is an editor on the health and technology page of the Wall Street Journal, and is also a poet.

Steven M. Shapiro is a partner in the firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt and a former Deputy Solicitor General of the United States. He is coauthor of Supreme Court Practice and a member of the Society.

D. Grier Stephenson, Jr. is a Professor of Government at Franklin and Marshall College, a co-author of the text American Constitutional Law and the author of numerous other works on that subject. Professor Stephenson is a regular contributor to the Yearbook and is a member of the Society.

Robert Stern is a partner in the Chicago firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt and served as Acting Solicitor General of the United States from 1952 to 1954. He is the author of Appellate Practice in the United States and co-author of Supreme Court Practice. Mr. Stern is a member of the Society.

Herbert Wechsler is a Harlan Fiske Stone Professor Emeritus of Constitutional Law at Columbia University. He is the author of several books on criminal law and constitutional law, and served as director of the American Law Institute from 1961 to 1984.
